The Weekly Ten
BINA. & Tkay Maidza
“R U OK?” asks the question nobody wants to answer
Feelings set free like moths from a jar.
Mask off
“R U OK?” orbits the things nobody says out loud: emotional suppression, anxiety, the defense mechanisms we use to look fine while coming apart. BINA. — the British-Nigerian singer-producer behind Chaos Is Her Name — has said she needed a song like this in her discography, a place to let the feelings she usually manages alone roam free until they get less scary.
Produced by BluPrint with the shadows of Massive Attack and Portishead hanging over it, the track moves at a methodical, hypnotic pace. It’s confessional songwriting with the lights low.
Two voices, one daze
Then Tkay Maidza arrives and nearly runs away with the song. The Australian rapper trades verses and one-liners with BINA., her flow cutting through the haze like a window opening — sharp, unbothered, magnetic. By the final stretch the two are asking each other the title question over distant piano keys, and neither sounds sure of the answer. That uncertainty is the whole point.
- The production — BluPrint builds a room you don’t want to leave, then makes you sit with yourself in it.
- The video — Directed by NIYADRE and shot in an undecorated flat, all brittle, anxious energy.
- The bigger picture — “R U OK?” follows “Zombies” and “The Art of Anger” into Soft Rage, BINA.’s mixtape out November 6 on Platoon.
The Weekly Ten says
This is the strongest single of the week’s ten: a genuine meeting of two distinct artists, a production that understands the assignment, and a question that lingers long after the song ends.
