“Idela” is post-rock as séance
Post-rock that breathes like a person.
Written backwards, felt forwards
Most collaborations start with a song and find a singer. “Idela” did it the other way around: Amiture Music — Jack Whitescarver’s Brooklyn project, now a full band — composed the track as an instrumental, then invited New York songwriter and pianist Eliana Glass to respond to it. She wrote all the lyrics from the intense, unexpected associations the music produced in her. Nothing was fitted; everything was felt.
The guitars still swell and recede, the dynamics still move from minimal to maximal — but the intertwined vocals subtly undermine the genre’s usual solemnity. It’s music that seems to be listening back.
Two women, one frame
“Idela” leads the 2 Women EP, out October 30 on Dots Per Inch Music. The lo-fi video, shot on a GoPro, stars Hanna Gabbler as a woman swimming in an indoor pool — unease in every small frame.
- The method — Lyrics written to the music’s feeling rather than imposed on it.
- The voices — Two singers circling each other, never quite landing — the tension is the point.
- The lineage — Echoes of This Heat’s experiments and The Blue Nile’s elegance, filtered through a Brooklyn practice room.
The Weekly Ten says
“Idela” is that rare collaboration where the process is audible in the product — open, instinctive, a little haunted.
