The best debut story of the week starts with an eclipse. Bluegirl — British-Cypriot alt-pop artist Phoebe Xenofontos — posted a snippet of “Look At All the Happy People” on the day of a solar eclipse, and within days it was shared by Courtney Love, with demands for the full track piling up. A demo shared via a secret SoundCloud link passed 66,000 plays in under a month. Today, the official debut single arrives via Capitol UK and Darkroom Records, with a visualizer — and the song justifies the pile-on.

Her own description: “My favourite type of music is that big, melancholy existential pop. It feels huge and otherworldly; it could either make you feel like there are endless possibilities or just make you cry.” And the song: “This song is a plea for connection, for all the existentialism you can fit into one brain, the weight of the human experience and the search for something greater.” A propulsive, atmospheric anthem — euphoric energy against introspective lyrics, the contradiction that made the demo spread.

What makes Bluegirl different from a typical industry-plant narrative is the track record: she’s spent years behind the scenes as a co-writer and producer for a string of buzzy artists — most notably Déyyess’s Claire EP, plus Daydreamers and total tommy — and she’s a recipient of the PRS Hitmaker Fund. She wrote, produced, and performed this entire track herself. “Look At All The Happy People” introduces an artist who creates and controls every aspect of her music, and as the label notes, “there is plenty more proof of her powers on the way.”

It’s the newest song on this week’s Ten — out today — and the freshest story: a producer stepping out front with the confidence of someone who’s watched the machine from the inside. The Line of Best Fit, uDiscover, and BroadwayWorld all covered the launch today. Big, melancholy existential pop, arriving fully formed. Keep the name.
