Fresh from the mailbag — and this one stopped us cold.
Izzy Escobar has been quietly stacking one of the most interesting résumés in new pop: a classically trained violinist with Cuban and Italian roots, songs landing in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Hacks, festival stages from BottleRock to the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and an AJR tour slot. “Ego Talking,” her new single via Artist House and Interscope, might be the one that puts the name on everyone’s lips.
Written with Scott Harris (Sabrina Carpenter) and Jimmie Gutch (Justin Bieber) — Gutch also producing, Rob Kinelski on the mix — the credits read like a hit, and the song earns them. “Ego Talking” is a post-fight autopsy: the things said in the heat of it, the pride doing the talking while the heart goes quiet. Escobar has described it as the war between soul and ego, ancient ideas dressed in pop clothes — and she sings it like someone who’s lived every line.
What elevates it past confession is the vocal. There’s a theatrical ache in her delivery, big and unguarded, that turns “that’s my ego talking” from a lyric into a reckoning. The production stays out of her way — piano-led and spacious, letting that voice do the damage. At two minutes fifty-five, it doesn’t waste a second.
This is the kind of song that finds people at exactly the right moment. Play it loud, then play it again.
